Rent out your RV to offset storage costs
Storage is a fixed bill that arrives every month, whether you take the RV out or not. Renting the RV to other travelers on the weeks you don't need it turns some of that idle time into income that can cover part or all of the storage cost.
How renting offsets storage
- Know your monthly cost. Start with what you pay for the space, plus insurance and any fees. If you haven't chosen a facility yet, compare posted rates on our RV storage cost page.
- Estimate what one booking nets you. Take your nightly price, subtract the platform's fees and your own costs (cleaning, propane, wear items, mileage or generator hours), and see how many booked nights it takes to cover a month of storage.
- Block out your own trips first. List only the dates you don't need, so renting fills idle time instead of competing with your own use.
- Track it for a season. Bookings are uneven: summer and holiday weekends book differently from the off-season. Compare a few months of actual payouts with your storage bill before deciding it pays for itself.

Check these before you list
- Your storage lease. Some facilities don't allow commercial use, or only let the named tenant through the gate. Ask whether a renter may pick up on site, or plan to deliver the RV or hand it over somewhere else.
- Access hours. Gate hours limit pick-up and return times. Our city pages show gate hours where the operator publishes them.
- Insurance. Personal RV policies often exclude rentals. RVshare says rentals with activated insurance and protection get coverage through its program; read the details and tell your own insurer what you plan to do.
- Loan, lease or HOA terms. A financed RV may have rules about renting it out. Check the agreement.
- Taxes. Rental income is generally taxable, and some states or cities charge rental taxes. Ask a tax professional how it applies to you.
- Condition and turnover. Every rental needs a walk-through, cleaning, and tanks, propane and fluids checked. Budget your time for this, or the cost if you pay someone.
- Wear. More miles and generator hours mean earlier maintenance on tires, brakes, the roof and appliances.
Is it a good fit?
Renting tends to suit owners whose RV sits for long stretches, who live near renters' destinations or can deliver, and who are willing to handle turnovers. If your RV is only stored for a short winter break, a well-prepared storage plan may be the simpler option: see our winter storage checklist.
Renting out a stored RV: FAQ
Can I rent out my RV while it is in a storage facility?
Often, but check first. Some storage leases restrict commercial use or limit who may enter the gate, so ask your facility whether renters can pick up on site or whether you need to deliver the RV or meet renters elsewhere.
Will renting out my RV cover my storage cost?
It depends on how often it is booked, your nightly price, platform fees, cleaning, wear and your storage rate. Nobody can promise a number; compare your expected payouts after fees with your monthly storage bill before you commit.
Does my RV insurance cover rentals?
Personal RV policies often exclude peer-to-peer rentals. RVshare says rentals with activated insurance and protection are covered through its program; read the coverage details and talk to your own insurer before listing.
