How to choose RV or boat storage

• Measure first. Use overall length including the hitch/tongue and any rear rack, and height including A/C units, antennas or a boat tower. Ask whether the listed space size is the usable length.
• Covered vs. enclosed vs. open. A canopy blocks sun and hail; an enclosed garage also blocks dust, wind and prying eyes. Decide based on how long the rig sits and what you'd otherwise spend on covers and repairs.
• Power. “Electric” usually means a low-amp outlet for a battery tender, not a full hookup. Ask about amperage, extra fees, and whether running a fridge or A/C is allowed.
• Access. Check gate hours against when you actually leave for trips. Early departures and late returns matter.
• Security. Look for perimeter fencing, coded entry and exit, cameras that record, lighting and an on-site manager. Ask what their insurance requires of you.
• Maneuvering. Pull-through spaces and wide paved aisles make big rigs and solo parking much easier.
• Extras. Dump station, water fill, wash bay, air and propane can save a stop on every trip.
• Contract terms. Ask about minimum terms, admin fees, deposits, required insurance, documents (registration/title) and how rate increases work.
• Waitlists. Popular covered sizes can sell out. Ask to be added to a waitlist and when spaces usually open up.

Nashville-specific tips

• Boating on Percy Priest Lake? BlueGate on Percy Priest Dr says it's minutes from the Hamilton Creek, Seven Points and Four Corners ramps, and RecNation is nearby on Pleasant Hill Rd. Pack Rat in Smyrna and Big Box Storage, also in Smyrna, both mention being close to the lake.
• For Old Hickory Lake, Gallatin Marina has covered dry storage for 120 boats up to 30 ft, plus covered wet slips and jet ports. Lock Box in Mt. Juliet says it's about 3 miles from the Shutes Branch ramp. Go Store It has lots in Hendersonville and Gallatin.
• Covered spaces are scarce. StorPlace Gallatin showed every covered and outdoor parking size as waitlisted, and MyPlace Murfreesboro says its covered spots up to 45 ft are in high demand. Old Timer (Mt. Juliet), Ark Haven (Christiana), BlueGate, US Storage Centers La Vergne and Mallory Station's 14 ft canopy in Franklin all list covered spaces.
• Want fully enclosed storage? RecNation's indoor garages come with power ($279-$430 online), and BlueGate lists enclosed garages from $309, with powered units from $378. Big Box Storage in Smyrna and Pack Rat also offer enclosed units.
• Check access hours before a dawn launch. Old Timer, Lock Box, Secure Storage of Cool Springs and I-65 Storage list 24-hour access. BlueGate, Go Store It, StorPlace, MyPlace and US Storage Centers open 6am-10pm, RecNation gives 24-hour access on request and Ark Haven charges a fee for it. Lebanon RV Center allows access only during business hours with 48 hours' notice.
• Read the lease terms. Old Timer has a 6-month minimum, and MyPlace requires vehicles that run plus current insurance and registration. Online rates at Go Store It, BlueGate and RecNation are lower than their in-store rates.
